How to Sleep Pain-Free with Back Pain & Sciatica

Bob and Brad demonstrate multiple ways to sleep with back pain without making it worse.

How to Sleep Pain-Free with Back Pain and Sciatica

Getting quality sleep is essential when dealing with back pain or sciatica. Pain can wear you down both physically and mentally, making it harder for your body to heal. In this Bob & Brad Sciatica Program, we share practical sleeping positions and support tips to help reduce discomfort, ease sciatic pain, and improve rest.

The key is to experiment with different positions to find what works best for your body. Some people may feel better sleeping on their back with a leg wedge or pillows under the knees, while others may need lumbar support to maintain the natural curve of the lower back. A soft ice pack may also provide temporary relief during flare-ups.

For side sleepers, placing a pillow between the knees can help reduce rotational stress on the spine. If sciatica pain travels down one leg, try sleeping with the painful leg on top and placing one or two pillows under the ankles and feet to see if it eases the symptoms.

We also discuss options for people who sleep in a recliner due to back pain. Using a throw pillow or lumbar support behind the lower back and reclining as far as comfortably possible can help reduce strain. Another option is the 90/90 position, where you lie on your back with your legs supported on a chair or stool.

Finally, your mattress matters. If your mattress is sagging, placing plywood between the mattress and box spring, moving the mattress to the floor, or using a mattress topper may help create a firmer, more supportive sleep surface.

These simple sleep adjustments can help people with back pain and sciatica find a more comfortable position, reduce nighttime pain, and get the restorative sleep needed for healing.
