How to Perform Nerve Flossing Which Can Help Sciatica

Bob and Brad demonstrate nerve flossing to decrease your pain.

How to Perform Nerve Flossing for Sciatica Relief

Nerve flossing, also called neural gliding, is a specialized exercise that may help reduce sciatica pain by improving the movement and mobility of irritated nerves. While this technique can be highly effective for some people, we emphasize that it must be performed carefully because it can also aggravate symptoms if done incorrectly.

What Is Nerve Flossing?

Just as dental floss glides between teeth, nerve flossing aims to gently move the sciatic nerve back and forth within its surrounding tissues. This movement may help decrease nerve sensitivity, improve mobility, and reduce radiating pain associated with sciatica.

The goal is not to stretch the nerve aggressively but rather to encourage smooth, pain-free movement.

Important Safety Tips Before You Begin

Nerve flossing is not the first exercise we recommend for sciatica. If other exercises in the Sciatica Program are helping, continue with those first.

Before trying nerve flossing:

  • Start with only 10 repetitions

  • Wait 24 hours to evaluate your response

  • Stop immediately if you experience increased pain in the buttock, leg, or foot

  • Avoid the "no pain, no gain" mentality

  • Only move within a comfortable range of motion

If symptoms worsen, wait several days to one week before trying again.

How to Perform Sciatic Nerve Flossing

You will need a surface high enough to allow your leg to swing freely underneath, such as a treatment table, bench, or sturdy desk.

Starting Position

  • Sit upright with good posture.

  • Allow the painful leg to hang freely.

  • Keep your back tall and relaxed.

Movement Phase 1

At the same time:

  • Extend your neck and look upward.

  • Straighten your knee.

  • Pull your toes upward toward your shin (dorsiflexion).

This position places gentle tension on the nerve.

Movement Phase 2

At the same time:

  • Bend your neck forward.

  • Bend your knee.

  • Point your toes downward.

These two coordinated movements equal one repetition.

Complete 10 repetitions total at a controlled pace.

How Often Should You Perform Nerve Flossing?

After completing your first set of 10 repetitions:

If pain stays the same or improves:

Continue performing nerve flossing once daily.

If pain increases:

Stop the exercise and wait approximately one week before attempting it again.

Before retrying, we recommend performing the exercises demonstrated in #1 Sciatica Exercise for Disc Bulging, Herniation, Etc., such as prone lying or elbow props, if they can be done comfortably.

If nerve flossing continues to increase symptoms despite these modifications, it may simply not be the right technique for your condition.

How Long Does It Take to Work?

Nerve flossing helps desensitize irritated nerves, but results vary from person to person. Some individuals notice improvements within days, while others may require several weeks or even months of consistent practice.

Patience is important. Sciatica recovery often involves identifying and reducing pain triggers while combining several appropriate exercises.

Key Takeaways

  • Nerve flossing may help reduce sciatic nerve irritation and radiating pain.

  • Start cautiously with only 10 repetitions.

  • Monitor symptoms for 24 hours before progressing.

  • Never push through increasing nerve pain.

  • Continue only if symptoms remain the same or improve.

  • Combining nerve flossing with prone progression exercises may improve tolerance and results.

Remember, if nerve flossing is not helpful for your symptoms, there are many other strategies available for managing sciatica. Finding the right approach often requires listening to your body's response and progressing gradually.
