How to Mobilize Wrists
Bob and Brad demonstrate techniques to mobilize the wrist to increase the range of motion
How to Mobilize Your Wrists: 4 Simple Techniques to Improve Wrist Mobility and Reduce Stiffness
Whether your wrists feel stiff from golfing, typing, gaming, lifting weights, or years of everyday use, improving wrist mobility can help you move more comfortably and perform daily activities with less discomfort. Tight muscles and stiff wrist joints often limit range of motion, making simple tasks like gripping, lifting, or pushing more difficult.
In this Bob and Brad Stretch & More Program, the focus is on restoring natural wrist movement through gentle joint mobilization and soft tissue techniques. These methods are designed to improve wrist mobility, decrease stiffness, and help your wrists move more freely.
Note: This is a fitness and mobility program designed to improve flexibility and joint motion. It is not intended to diagnose or treat a medical condition. If you experience significant pain, swelling, numbness, or have recently injured your wrist, consult your healthcare provider before performing these techniques.
Why Wrist Mobility Matters
Your wrists are involved in nearly every upper-body movement. Repetitive activities such as:
Computer work
Gaming
Golf
Tennis
Weightlifting
Carpentry or construction work
Gardening
Everyday lifting and carrying
can cause the muscles of the forearm and the wrist joint itself to become tight over time.
Because the muscles that control your fingers and wrist originate in the forearm, improving flexibility and reducing muscle tension in the forearm can often improve wrist motion as well.
1. Wrist Joint Mobilization (Brad's Decompression Technique)
One of Bob and Brad's favorite wrist mobility exercises involves gently decompressing the wrist joint while adding controlled rotation.
The technique works by:
Stabilizing the forearm
Applying gentle traction (pulling the hand away from the wrist)
Slowly rotating the forearm while maintaining the traction
This combination helps create space within the joint while encouraging healthy movement through the wrist.
Benefits
Improves wrist mobility
Helps decrease joint stiffness
May feel relieving for arthritic wrists
Encourages smoother joint motion
The key is relaxation. Avoid tightening your forearm muscles while performing this technique, as relaxed muscles allow the joint to move much more freely.
2. Massage the Forearm Muscles
Many people assume wrist stiffness comes only from the wrist itself, but much of the restriction actually begins in the forearm.
The muscles that bend and straighten the wrist travel across the wrist joint. If these muscles become tight, they can limit wrist motion.
Using a massage gun on both the front and back of the forearm can help:
Release muscle tension
Improve tissue mobility
Prepare the wrist for activity
Promote recovery afterward
Spend approximately 20–30 seconds on particularly tight areas before moving to another section of the forearm.
This technique can be especially helpful for:
Golfers
Tennis players
Gamers
Mechanics
Tradespeople
Anyone performing repetitive gripping activities
3. Manual Forearm Massage
If you don't have a massage gun, manual massage is an excellent alternative.
Use your opposite hand to massage the muscles along both sides of your forearm. Apply comfortable pressure while slowly working from the elbow toward the wrist.
Manual massage can:
Reduce muscle tightness
Improve circulation
Increase tissue flexibility
Prepare the wrist for stretching or mobility exercises
4. Foam Roller, Lacrosse Ball, or Golf Ball
Another simple option is using a small massage tool.
You can roll your forearm over:
A golf ball
A lacrosse ball
A foam roller
Many people find that a golf ball or lacrosse ball provides deeper, more targeted pressure than a larger foam roller, making it easier to work into the smaller forearm muscles.
Slowly roll over tight spots and pause briefly when you find an area of tension.
Program Summary
To improve wrist mobility, perform the following sequence:
Apply gentle wrist traction while rotating the forearm.
Massage both sides of the forearm with a massage gun.
Perform manual massage along the forearm muscles.
Use a golf ball, lacrosse ball, or foam roller to further release tight areas.
Practicing these techniques consistently can help maintain healthy wrist motion and keep the surrounding muscles loose.
Tips for Best Results
Keep your arm as relaxed as possible during joint mobilization.
Avoid forcing movements that create sharp pain.
Use gentle pressure and gradually increase as tolerated.
Perform these mobility techniques before activities like golf, tennis, lifting, or prolonged computer work.
Repeat after activity to help reduce muscle tightness and support recovery.
Improve Wrist Mobility Naturally
Healthy wrists depend on both flexible muscles and mobile joints. By combining gentle joint decompression with forearm soft tissue work, you can improve wrist flexibility, reduce stiffness, and maintain comfortable movement for everyday activities.
Adding these simple techniques to your regular mobility routine can help keep your wrists moving their best—whether you're working, exercising, or simply enjoying your favorite hobbies.
