First Step to Stopping Back Pain/Sciatica. Begin Walking

Bob and Brad demonstrate why walking is beneficial to your back pain, how to check and correct your posture, and how to walk correctly.

Begin Walking: The First Step to Relieving Back Pain and Sciatica

Walking can be one of the simplest and most effective first steps for helping relieve back pain and sciatica—when done correctly and without increasing leg pain. In this Bob and Brad program, we explain why walking can act like a “natural balm” for the back by improving blood flow, increasing joint lubrication through synovial fluid, encouraging movement, and helping the body release natural pain-relieving endorphins.

The key is to walk in a way that does not make symptoms worse. If walking increases your leg pain, numbness, tingling, or back discomfort, do not push through it. Instead, small adjustments may help make walking more comfortable and effective.

We recommend first checking your posture. Poor walking posture, especially a forward head position or rounded shoulders, can increase strain on the lower back and aggravate sciatic symptoms. Using a walking stick, broom handle, or Booyah Stik can help you check for proper alignment at the pelvis, mid-back, and head. A chin tuck, shoulders-back position, or even holding a towel behind your back can also help encourage better posture while walking.

Another common mistake is walking too slowly. A slightly quicker pace with natural arm swing may reduce stress on the spine and help improve movement, circulation, and comfort. Shorter, smoother strides can also decrease impact traveling up through the legs and into the back.

For best results, start small. Walk short distances close to home, such as around the house or to the end of the block and back, so you can monitor symptoms and gradually build endurance. Flat, even surfaces are best, and hills, stairs, and uneven ground should be avoided at first.

We also discuss helpful strategies such as using a cane or walking stick to slightly unweight the spine, practicing relaxed breathing with a 4-4-4-4 rhythm, taking decompression breaks on a sturdy bench or chair, and experimenting with tightening the abdomen or adjusting the arch in the lower back.

Dog owners should also be cautious. A pulling leash can create twisting stress through the back and may worsen symptoms. If walking your dog increases pain, consider walking without the dog temporarily while you build strength and control.

This program is designed to help you safely use walking as a starting point for back pain and sciatica relief. The goal is not to force movement, but to find a comfortable, pain-free way to begin moving again and support the healing process.
