Back Pain? When Do You Need to See a Doctor Immediately!
Back Pain? When Do You Really Need to See a Doctor
We get it—back pain is frustrating. And sometimes it's hard to know if you should push through or call your doctor. That's why Bob and Brad, the internet's most famous physical therapists, created a straightforward checklist.
Here's the deal: If any of these 7 things happen, don't wait.
1. Pain Travels Below Your Knee
Your leg hurts below the knee? That's usually a pinched nerve. Time to call the doc.
2. You Feel Numb "Down There"
Numbness in your leg, foot, groin, or rectal area—especially if it's everywhere a saddle would sit (hello, "saddle anesthesia")—is serious. If you're also losing bladder or bowel control, hit the emergency room. Don't wait.
3. You're Sick, AND Your Back Hurts
Fever, nausea, vomiting, stomach ache, weakness, or sweating paired with back pain? That's your cue. (Yes, even COVID can cause excruciating back pain.)
4. Your Legs Are Weak
Can't lift your foot when you walk? That's foot drop, and it means a nerve is pinched. Weakness + balance issues = see your doctor ASAP.
5. You've Been in an Accident
Car crash, fall, or major trauma? See a doctor even if you feel okay right now. Adrenaline masks pain—inflammation hits later.
6. You Can't Even Move
Pain so intense you're shuffling around like a crab? Yeah, that deserves professional attention.
7. It's Not Getting Better
Two to three weeks in and still hurting? Time for a checkup to rule out anything else.
The Bottom Line
Not all back pain needs a doctor visit immediately—but these situations do. Trust your gut, and when in doubt, call.
