12 "Pain Makers" That Can Destroy Your Back & Stop it From Healing

Bob and Brad demonstrate the most common pain makers that destroy your back and keep it from healing.

12 Pain Makers That Could Destroy Your Back and Stop It From Healing

Back pain and sciatica don't usually happen because of one single injury. More often, they develop over time from repeated daily movements and postures that place stress on the spine. In this lesson from the Bob & Brad Sciatica Program, physical therapists Bob Schrupp and Brad Heineck reveal the 12 common "pain maker" positions that may be preventing your back from healing.

Understanding these habits can help reduce stress on the spine, improve recovery, and potentially decrease back pain by simply moving smarter throughout the day.

Why Daily Habits Matter for Back Pain

Many people unknowingly spend hours each day in positions that overload the discs, joints, and tissues of the lower back. Over weeks, months, and years, these repeated stresses can contribute to:

  • Sciatica

  • Disc bulges and herniations

  • Chronic low back pain

  • Increased stiffness and inflammation

  • Delayed healing

The good news? Small changes in posture and movement patterns can make a significant difference.

The 12 Back Pain "Pain Makers"

1. Sitting Too Long

Even sitting with good posture places more stress on the spine than standing or lying down. Long periods of sitting should be broken up with frequent movement and walking.

2. Sitting in a Slouched "C Position"

Rounded posture, especially in soft couches and recliners, increases pressure on the discs and may aggravate back pain and sciatica symptoms.

3. Slouching While Holding Weight

Holding objects while sitting in a rounded posture dramatically increases stress on the spine.

4. Twisting While Carrying Weight

Rotating the spine while lifting or carrying objects places additional strain on spinal structures and can worsen existing back issues.

5. Curling the Spine During Sit-Ups

Traditional sit-ups involve repeated spinal flexion, which can place excessive stress on the discs and may aggravate sciatica.

6. Curling Up and Twisting

Combining spinal flexion with rotation is even more stressful on the lower back and should generally be avoided when recovering from back pain.

7. Lifting Weights With a Rounded Back

Whether at the gym or at home, lifting with a rounded "C-shaped" spine significantly increases the risk of irritation and injury.

8. Lifting Extremely Heavy Loads

Even with excellent form, lifting very heavy weights repeatedly can overload the spine and potentially damage the vertebral end plates.

9. Repeated Forward Bending

Activities like brushing your teeth, making the bed, gardening, or leaning over the sink can become problematic when performed in a rounded position.

10. Bending Forward and Twisting

This combination is particularly stressful on the discs and commonly occurs when moving objects from one side of the body to the other.

11. Bending Forward While Holding Weight

Picking up laundry baskets, grocery bags, or other household items while bent forward increases spinal stress considerably.

12. Bending, Twisting, and Adding Weight

This is considered the most stressful position for the back. Movements such as shoveling snow, carrying laundry baskets, or twisting while lifting can significantly worsen back pain and sciatica symptoms.

Why These Positions Matter

We emphasize that back pain rarely develops overnight. Instead, repetitive exposure to poor postures gradually wears down the spine's ability to tolerate stress.

Many people do not realize they spend much of their day in the "C position," where the back is rounded and unsupported. Over time, this posture can begin to feel normal, even though it may be contributing to ongoing pain and dysfunction.

Research suggests that improving movement habits and avoiding painful positions may reduce symptoms substantially and create a better environment for healing.

Key Takeaway

If your back pain or sciatica isn't improving, the issue may not only be what exercises you're doing—it could also be the positions you're repeatedly placing your spine in every day.

By identifying and reducing these 12 pain makers, you may be able to decrease stress on your back, improve spinal health, and support long-term recovery.
