Why You Should Not Buy a Massage Gun. Why You Should

Bob and Brad explain why you may not want to buy a massage gun, as well as a list of reasons you may want to buy a massage gun.

Massage Gun Benefits vs. Risks: A Physical Therapist's Guide

If you're on the fence about adding a massage gun to your recovery routine, physical therapists Bob and Brad break down exactly when this popular tool helps — and when it can actually do more harm than good.

When a Massage Gun Isn't the Right Choice

Massage guns are great for many things, but they aren't a cure-all. Bob and Brad explain that you should avoid using one in these situations:

  • Hard-to-reach areas like your upper back and traps — you may need a partner to get the right angle and leverage

  • Disc herniation or sciatica — a massage gun won't heal a pinched nerve, even if you feel temporary relief from looser muscles

  • Neck and head — the muscles here sit too close to the spine to safely "hammer" with a massage gun

  • Headaches — for the same reason, this isn't the right tool for headache relief

  • Over a pulse point or near surface-level arteries

  • Bony surfaces, with few exceptions (like the top of the kneecap for quad tendonitis)

  • Directly over the heart

  • During pregnancy (never over the belly)

  • Not over the bursae

  • If you have a bleeding disorder or bruise easily

  • After a recent surgery, unless cleared by your provider, a massage can dislodge blood clots

  • With nerve disorders, MS, epilepsy, or other nervous system conditions, unless approved by your doctor

  • Open sores, skin tears, or skin disorders

  • Healing fractures or broken bones

When a Massage Gun Is a Great Tool

On the flip side, Bob and Brad point to plenty of good reasons to keep one on hand:

  • Easy to use: no need to get down on the floor as you would with a foam roller

  • Better than nothing: many patients actually prefer it over a hands-on massage, and your hands won't get tired doing it yourself

  • Family-friendly: most people in the household can use it safely

  • Great for warm-ups: before workouts or sports, and for cooling down afterward

  • Supports muscle recovery and works well for muscle strains, scar tissue, and tendonitis

  • A genuinely good gift: it's one of the most popular and useful wellness products to give

Bottom Line

A massage gun is a powerful recovery tool — but like any tool, it works best when you know its limits. Used the right way, it can speed up warm-ups, ease muscle soreness, and become a daily part of your wellness routine. Used the wrong way, it can do more harm than good.
