Total Hip Replacement- Activities 3+ months after surgery do's and don'ts
Total Hip Replacement Fitness Program: Exercise Do’s & Don’ts After 3 Months
Staying active after a total hip replacement is important, but choosing the right activities can help protect your new hip and keep you moving safely. In this video, physical therapist assistants Alex and Mike share recommended exercises and activities 3 months or more after total hip replacement surgery, along with higher-impact activities you may want to avoid.
Activities to Do After Hip Replacement
Once you’re past the early recovery stage and have been cleared by your healthcare provider, lower-impact activities can help improve strength, mobility, and overall fitness. Recommended activities include walking, cycling, swimming, flat-terrain cross-country skiing, low-impact aerobics, canoeing or kayaking, and golf.
When returning to exercise, gradually increase your activity based on your comfort level. If you return to strength training, consider lighter, controlled resistance rather than heavy lifting.
Activities to Avoid After Hip Replacement
Higher-impact activities can place greater stress on your hip replacement or involve sudden twisting, jumping, or contact. Activities to avoid or approach with caution include contact sports, baseball, soccer, jogging, competitive basketball, heavy lifting, high-impact aerobics, and jumping activities.
Your individual recovery and precautions may vary, so always follow the recommendations of your surgeon or healthcare provider.
Watch the video above to hear Alex and Mike explain each activity and learn more about the exercise do’s and don’ts after total hip replacement surgery.
