Tools That Can Fix Your Back Pain

Bob and Brad discuss tools that can fix your back pain.

How to Know If Your Back Pain Tools Are Actually Working

When Bob and Brad talk about "tools," they're not reaching for a wrench or a screwdriver. They're talking about the exercises, stretches, positions, and educational tips designed to help you take control of your back pain. And if you've been trying different strategies, you've probably wondered: Is this actually helping, or am I just wasting my time?

Here's the good news: there's a simple way to tell.

The Real Sign Your Treatment Is Working

The most important indicator that your back pain is improving might surprise you—it's not about the pain disappearing completely. It's about where the pain is moving.

Here's the principle: the more irritated your nerve is, the further down your leg the pain radiates. You might feel pain, numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness all the way down to your foot. But as the nerve calms down and becomes less irritated, something magical happens—the symptoms start retreating upward.

So your pain moves from your foot → to your lower leg → to your thigh → and finally back to your lower back. This isn't just improvement; it's a sign your nervous system is healing. If you're seeing this pattern with your tools, you're on the right track.

The Four Scenarios: Which Tools Should You Keep?

Not every tool works for every person—and that's okay. The Bob and Brad philosophy is simple: use what helps you, and disregard the rest. But how do you tell the difference?

Scenario 1: Pain During the Exercise (Stop Immediately)

If you try a tool and experience sharp, outright pain while performing it, stop. Don't push through it.

There's a difference between discomfort and pain. A slight bit of discomfort at the beginning of a stretch or exercise is normal and acceptable. But if it hurts, it's telling you something—listen to it. This tool isn't for you right now.

Scenario 2: Pain Gets Worse Immediately After

You feel fine while doing the exercise, but right after you're done, your pain spikes. This is a red flag. Stop using that tool.

However—and this is important—don't assume an exercise caused your pain if it gets worse the next day. You might have done something else in the meantime that irritated your back. If you're curious, try the exercise again and see if there's a clear correlation before deciding to abandon it.

Scenario 3: Better During AND After (The Sweet Spot)

This is the tool you've been looking for. Your back feels better while you're doing it, and it stays better after you're finished. This is "hurts so good" territory—slight discomfort during a stretch that results in genuine improvement.

Action: Keep this tool. Incorporate it into your daily routine, and you might even do it several times a day if needed.

Scenario 4: Better Only After (Still a Winner)

Maybe the exercise feels a bit uncomfortable while you're doing it, but afterward? Relief. This still counts as a successful tool.

There might be a bit of that initial discomfort, but if the end result is feeling better, you can confidently add it to your routine.

The "No Pain, No Gain" Myth Doesn't Apply Here

This is crucial: you're not aiming for pain. The "no pain, no gain" mentality has no place in treating back pain. If an exercise causes you pain, your body is telling you it's not the right approach.

A slight bit of discomfort? Sure. Temporary soreness? That's part of the process. But sharp, shooting pain? That's your signal to stop.

Put Your Tools to Work

The Bob and Brad toolbox isn't about finding the one magic exercise. It's about experimenting with tools, monitoring how your body responds, and building a personalized routine that actually works for you.

Start with one tool. Track how you feel during and after. If it meets Scenario 3 or 4 criteria, add it to your daily toolkit; if it doesn't, set it aside and try another one.

And remember: when you feel that pain migrating upward, from your foot toward your back, that's the real victory. That's your signal that healing is happening.

Your back pain doesn't need willpower. It needs the right tools.
