Tool #5 How to Sit Without Back Pain In Your Car

Bob and Brad demonstrate how to sit without back pain in your car.

Stop Sitting Like This in Your Car (It's Killing Your Back)

That dreaded C-shaped slouch in your car seat? It's a blueprint for back pain. But it doesn't have to be this way.

The Problem

That C-curve slouch? Your discs get pushed backward, ligaments stretch, muscles fatigue. And vibration makes it worse.

The Fix: Get a Lumbar Support

Start with a rolled towel to test thickness. Too bumpy? Thinner. Not enough? Thicker. Then upgrade to foam.

How to place it:

  • Belt level

  • Scoot all the way back

  • Keep spine straight

Special cases: Spinal stenosis? Less arch. Sciatica? Find what works for your back.

The 5 Rules

  1. Seat forward — stops you from sliding back

  2. Use the dead pedal — footrest left of brake

  3. Hands at 9 and 3 — not high on the wheel

  4. Don't reach back — twisting kills your spine

  5. Don't recline far — you'll just slouch

The Secret: Movement Beats Perfect Posture

Stop every 30–60 minutes and walk. Even with great support, sitting still stresses your spine.

Recovering from injury? Avoid long drives. Must drive? Keep it short, stop often. Don't lift anything heavy after—your back will be fried.
