Tool #3 for Back Pain: Tightening Your Core
Tool #3: Tighten Your Core to Fix Morning Back Pain
Waking up with back pain? Your discs absorb fluid overnight, making your spine vulnerable for the first 1–2 hours after getting up. Here's the fix.
The Problem
Most people roll out of bed with a rounded spine. This is brutal on swollen discs. If a back belt helps, you need to build that stability yourself.
The Solution: Log Roll with Core Tightening
Before you move:
Tighten your abdominal muscles hard
Press your fingers on your sides to feel engagement
Arch your low back to neutral
Then roll:
Move as one unit (shoulders, abdomen, hips, legs together like a log)
Roll to your side
Push up on elbows, then both hands
Stand with back straight
One patient's main complaint was getting out of bed—after doing this, his pain disappeared.
Beyond the Bedroom
Use core tightening for sitting to standing, lifting, and any twisting motions.
Alternative Method (Severe Pain)
Try the golfer's lift: approach the bed from the side, tip forward while lifting the leg closest to the bed (back straight), slide on, and roll with tightened core.
Takeaway: Tighten your core, move as one unit, control your pain. Try it for a week.
