How to Use a Riding Mower or Push Mower with Back Pain

Bob and Brad demonstrate how to use a riding mower or push mower with back pain.

How to Mow Your Lawn Without Killing Your Back

Riding Mower

The problem: Vibration, bouncing, and poor seat support wreck your spine.

The fixes:

  • Get a seat with a high backrest (low-back models don't cut it)

  • Add a memory foam lumbar cushion to your existing seat

  • Upgrade to a suspension seat (Brad's using a Toro Exmark—game changer)

Brad went from bailing halfway through to finishing in 1.5 hours.

Smart habits:

  • Break every 20 minutes—stand up and do back extensions

  • Walk for 5 minutes if mowing for over an hour

  • Skip heavy lifting for at least an hour after

  • If your back's flaring up, hire someone else

Note: If you have spondylolisthesis or spinal stenosis, skip the back extensions.

Push Mower

The key: Good posture and hand position.

Handle position matters. Keep the mower handle at pelvis height—max leverage, min stress on your back.

Don't pull uphill. Walk alongside the mower instead. Pulling rounds your back.

Posture check. Stand tall, shoulders back. Have someone take a photo of you mid-mow—you'll be shocked at your slouch.

Real Talk

Got serious back pain? Let someone else mow. Push mowing can be good exercise—do it right.

Bob & Brad's take: Do it smart, keep good form, take breaks. Your lawn isn't worth your back.
