How to Use a Massage Gun on Patellar Tendonitis

Bob and Brad explain patellar tendonitis and how to use a massage gun to treat it at home for quicker pain relief.

How to Use a Massage Gun for Patellar Tendonitis

Relieve Patellar Tendon Pain and Improve Knee Function

Patellar tendonitis, commonly known as jumper's knee, is a painful overuse injury that affects the tendon connecting the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia). It is often caused by repetitive activities such as running, jumping, squatting, and sports that place repeated stress on the knee. In this program, physical therapists Bob Schrupp and Brad Heineck demonstrate how to safely use a massage gun to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery from patellar tendonitis.

What Causes Patellar Tendonitis?

Patellar tendonitis develops when repetitive stress creates irritation and inflammation within the patellar tendon. Over time, tight quadriceps muscles can increase tension on the tendon, contributing to ongoing pain and discomfort around the front of the knee. Common symptoms include:

  • Pain just below the kneecap

  • Knee stiffness

  • Tenderness along the patellar tendon

  • Discomfort during jumping, running, or climbing stairs

  • Reduced athletic performance

Why Massage the Quadriceps First?

Before treating the patellar tendon itself, Bob and Brad recommend addressing tightness in the quadriceps muscles. Tight quads can continuously pull on the patellar tendon, increasing stress and slowing recovery.

Using a massage gun on the front of the thigh helps:

  • Reduce muscle tension

  • Improve blood flow

  • Decrease strain on the tendon

  • Improve overall knee mobility

Additional mobility techniques, such as knee flossing with a Knee Glide or similar tool, may further enhance movement and flexibility.

How to Use a Massage Gun for Patellar Tendonitis

Proper technique is critical when using a massage gun on an irritated tendon.

Step 1: Choose the Right Attachment

Use a round ball attachment for comfortable and effective treatment.

Step 2: Avoid the Kneecap

Do not massage directly over the kneecap or bony areas around the knee. Focus treatment on the patellar tendon below the kneecap.

Step 3: Use a Cross-Friction Technique

Move the massage gun sideways across the tendon fibers rather than directly up and down the tendon. This transverse motion may help stimulate healing and improve tissue mobility.

Step 4: Monitor Pain Levels

Begin with light pressure and low intensity. The treatment should either:

  • Cause pain to plateau and become more manageable

  • Create a mild numbing effect

If pain continues to increase, stop immediately and reduce intensity.

Step 5: Treat Consistently

Perform treatment for approximately 10 to 15 minutes throughout the day, divided into shorter sessions as needed.

Benefits of Massage Gun Therapy for Jumper's Knee

When used correctly, massage gun therapy may help:

  • Reduce patellar tendon pain

  • Improve circulation

  • Decrease quadriceps tightness

  • Enhance knee mobility

  • Support tendon recovery

  • Improve comfort during daily activities and exercise

Choosing the Right Massage Gun

Not all massage devices are equally effective. Bob and Brad recommend using a true percussion massage gun with reciprocating movement rather than a simple vibrating device. Percussion therapy delivers deeper, more targeted treatment that may be more beneficial for tendon-related conditions such as patellar tendonitis.

Who Is This Program For?

This program may be beneficial for:

  • Athletes experiencing jumper's knee

  • Runners with front knee pain

  • Basketball and volleyball players

  • Individuals recovering from overuse knee injuries

  • Anyone looking for non-invasive patellar tendon pain relief

Start Moving With Less Knee Pain

Learning how to properly use a massage gun for patellar tendonitis can be an effective part of a comprehensive recovery plan. By addressing both quadriceps tightness and tendon irritation, you can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and get back to the activities you enjoy.
