How to Use a Massage Gun on Calf Muscle Pain
Bob and Brad demonstrate how to use a massage gun on the calf muscles at home to reduce pain and muscle soreness.
How to Use a Massage Gun on Calf Muscle Pain
Calf pain doesn't always come from one obvious cause — and before you grab the massage gun, it's worth ruling out anything more serious. In this video, Bob and Brad walk through how to safely use a massage gun to treat calf muscle pain caused by strains or microtears, plus the head attachments and techniques that make the biggest difference.
When to see a doctor first
Not all calf pain is muscular. Bob and Brad recommend having a medical provider examine the area first to rule out a blood clot, diabetic neuropathy, or arterial claudication before starting any at-home treatment.
Step-by-step technique
Once muscle strain or microtear is confirmed as the cause, here's the method:
Find the tender spot. Palpate the calf to locate the painful area, then start massaging around the outer edges before working inward.
Go against the grain. Massage across the muscle fibers, not along them.
Stay put. Hold on the tender area until you notice a change — ideally, less pain.
Get into position. Cross your legs and rest one ankle on the opposite knee for easy access.
Add "flossing." While massaging, move your foot up, down, and side to side. This combines movement with massage for better results.
Choose the right attachment. Bob and Brad break down which massage gun head works best:
Big Round Head – best for larger muscle groups (calves, glutes, quads, hamstrings); moderate intensity
Small Round Head – gentler; great for tendonitis when used sideways
Air-Filled (Pneumatic) Head – the gentlest option; ideal near bone and sensitive tissue
Bullet Head – more aggressive; effective on trigger points and knots
Plastic Flat Head – moderate; works well on the IT band, pec major, or plantar fascia
Steel Flat Head – moderate to aggressive; can be heated or cooled before use
Knobby Attachment – for larger muscles; more aggressive
Field Goal Attachment – safe along both sides of the spine; some use it on the Achilles tendon
The takeaway
A massage gun, used correctly, can ease calf soreness from strains and tight muscles — but technique and attachment choice matter. Watch the full demonstration above, and download the printable guide sheet to keep the steps handy next time you need quick relief.
