Back Pain? Is Your Back Crooked?

Bob and Brad discuss back pain and ask the question, is your back crooked?

Is Your Back Crooked? Here's How to Straighten It Out

Your back used to be fine. Then one day—maybe after an awkward movement, a long car ride, or just waking up wrong—something shifted. Not your entire spine from childhood (that's scoliosis), but a new shift that showed up recently, and it brought back pain along for the ride.

If this sounds like you, you're not alone. And more importantly: this is fixable.

What We're Actually Talking About

Let's be clear: when Bob and Brad talk about a crooked or shifted back, they're not referring to scoliosis or lifelong spinal curves. They're talking about a recent shift—when your shoulders and upper back suddenly shift to one side, and your spine loses its neutral alignment.

This kind of shift is often connected to disc problems. And here's the key insight from years of physical therapy: if you don't correct this shift first, you won't get rid of the pain.

It might seem counterintuitive, but fixing the alignment has to come before everything else. The body won't cooperate with recovery until you've straightened things out.

How to Know If You Have a Shift

You don't need fancy imaging or a doctor's appointment to check this. All you need is a mirror—or better yet, a friend.

From behind, look for the telltale signs:

  • Are your shoulders and upper back shifted to one side?

  • Is there a visible gap on one side between your arm and your body?

  • On the other side, is your arm pressed flush against you?

If you spot this asymmetry, you've found your shift. Stand at a distance so you can see the full picture—tape isn't required (thankfully).

The Fix: The Wall Lean

This is simple. This is effective. This works.

If your back is shifted to the right:

  1. Stand facing the wall with your right shoulder and hip toward it

  2. Keep about 12–18 inches of space between you and the wall

  3. Bend your right elbow to 90 degrees and lay your forearm flat against the wall

  4. Lean your body against your arm and let your pelvis sink toward the wall

If your back is shifted to the left: Same thing—just reverse it.

You'll feel your spine begin to shift back toward center. That's the goal.

Pro tips from the pros:

  • A rolled towel against the wall can support your forearm and make it more comfortable

  • You can do pressure on, pressure off—lean in and release repeatedly

  • This should feel good, not painful. If you get sharp pain, back off

  • Start with about 10 gentle repetitions

  • If it's working, you can do this every hour, every day

What to Expect

Recovery isn't instant. Depending on how long the shift has been there, it could take several weeks to fully correct. You might only get a partial correction at first, and that's okay. Gentle and consistent beats aggressive and rushed.

But here's what's amazing: once that spine is straight again, other improvements follow. Less pain. Better function. Your body remembers how to work properly.

The Bottom Line

A crooked back doesn't stay that way. With a simple wall lean and some consistency, you can guide your spine back to where it belongs—and leave the back pain behind.

Because as Bob and Brad like to remind us: you can't walk around with a straight back and a crooked face. Get that spine aligned, and everything else gets better.

Note: This exercise is for spinal shifts that appeared recently, not lifelong scoliosis. If you experience sharp pain or your condition doesn't improve, consult a physical therapist or healthcare provider. Every body is different, and professional guidance is always worth it.
