Arranging Your Home & Work for Back Pain

Bob and Brad discuss how to arrange your home and work for back pain.

How to Arrange Your Home & Workplace to Stop Back Pain

Back pain isn't just something that happens at the gym or after a hard day's work. Sometimes, it's sneaking up on you in your own home—every time you reach for a pan in the lower cabinet, bend down to grab something from under the sink, or stretch to reach the top shelf.

The good news? This is totally preventable. And it starts with one simple concept: ergonomics.

At Bob & Brad, we've helped thousands of people reduce back strain by making one small change: rearranging how they store their stuff. It sounds almost too simple, but trust us—your back will thank you.

The Problem: Unnecessary Bending = Unnecessary Pain

Every time you bend forward or stoop down to grab something you use regularly, you're putting stress on your back. Do that 10, 20, or 50 times a day? Yeah, that adds up fast. The solution isn't fancy equipment or expensive treatments. It's just smart storage.

The 4 Rules for Back-Friendly Storage

Rule #1: Frequently Used Items Go Between Waist and Shoulder Height

This is the golden zone—the sweet spot for anything you grab daily.

Why? Because you use these items constantly, storing them at waist-to-shoulder level means you're rarely bending forward or reaching awkwardly.

Examples:

  • Coffee maker and mugs in the kitchen

  • Tools you use daily in your garage

  • Work supplies at your desk

  • Dishes you grab every meal

The heavier it is, the closer to waist level. Light items can sit a bit higher, but daily-use stuff belongs in your comfort zone.

Pro tip: Remember that "waist to shoulder" looks different for everyone. Brad and Bob proved this perfectly on video—one person's ideal shelf is another person's reach. Find your zone and work within it.

Rule #2: Light Items or Occasional Stuff Can Go Above Shoulder

Those things you use weekly or rarely? They're okay living up high.

Examples:

  • Fancy glasses you break out for guests

  • Seasonal decorations

  • Light kitchen items you don't need daily

Just don't make it a habit of reaching above your head for stuff you need constantly. That's a recipe for shoulder strain and upper back pain.

Rule #3: Infrequently Used Items Can Stay Below Waist

This is where the "less ideal but okay" stuff lives—items you reach for maybe once a week or less.

Why it's okay: You can bend down once a week without major consequences. It's the repetitive bending that wrecks your back.

Examples:

  • Specialty cooking equipment you use once a month

  • Storage boxes

  • Rarely-used tools

Real talk: There's a reason Bob and Brad's wives position the pots and pans differently. When you're married, compromises happen. But here's the thing—if your spouse is significantly shorter or taller, or uses different items daily, your storage strategy might look different. And that's fine. Just be aware of the ergonomic impact when you're setting things up.

Rule #4: Don't Lift Heavy Items (Seriously)

Heavy items should stay where they are or get moved by someone else. Period.

Need to reorganize? Get help. Your back isn't worth proving a point. As Bob and Brad say, "Get someone with a healthy back to do it—maybe a kid, maybe a neighbor." No shame in that game.

The Bottom Line

Ideally, everything in your home would sit between waist and shoulder height. That's the dream. But reality? You've got limited shelf space, height restrictions, and probably a spouse with different measurements than you.

Here's what matters: Be intentional about where things go. Think about what you grab most often, and put those items in the easiest-to-reach spots. Those daily reaches add up to hundreds of repetitions a year. Every time you can grab something without bending or reaching awkwardly, you're protecting your back.

The best part? This costs nothing. You're not buying new equipment or signing up for services. You're just rearranging what you already have.

Your back—and probably your marriage—will be better for it.

Pro tip from Bob & Brad: For detailed advice on proper lifting mechanics (for those heavy items you absolutely must move), check out our lifting technique video. And remember: prevention is always easier than recovery.
