Absolutely Do Not Stretch Your Chest Muscles Like This!

Bob and Brad discuss harmful stretches for your chest muscles and why you should avoid them.

Don't Stretch Your Chest Like This: Protect Your Shoulders

Stretching your chest can improve posture and mobility—but certain stretches may actually increase your risk of shoulder impingement, rotator cuff injuries, tendonitis, and instability.

The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, and when you repeatedly force your arms behind your body—especially with the shoulders externally rotated—the ball of the shoulder can shift forward. Over time, this may place extra stress on the rotator cuff and surrounding tendons.

Chest Stretches to Avoid

1. Deep Doorway Stretch: Don't lean so far forward that your arms move behind your torso. Stop at a gentle stretch with your arms aligned with your body.

2. Partner-Assisted Stretch: Avoid having someone pull your arms backward, as this can overstretch the front of the shoulder.

3. Dumbbell Flyes Too Deep: When performing flyes, don't lower your elbows below your torso on a narrow bench. Stop at a neutral position.

4. Overhead Stick Stretch Behind the Neck: Don't force a stick or pole far behind your head. Bring it only to your neck or shoulders.

5. One-Arm Doorway Stretch: Avoid rotating your body too far away from your planted arm. Keep the stretch gentle and near neutral.

Key Takeaway

For healthy shoulders, keep chest stretches within a comfortable, neutral range. A gentle stretch is enough—forcing your shoulders into extreme positions may do more harm than good and increase your risk of shoulder pain and injury.
